Department of Complementary Medicine, University of Exeter, UK

The Laing Chair in Complementary Medicine at Exeter University was established in 1993 and the Department of Complementary Medicine was founded in 1996. Today the Department employs 13 researchers and 3 administrative staff with wide-ranging areas of expertise and professional backgrounds.

Aims

  • To conduct rigorous, inter-disciplinary and international collaborative research into the efficacy, safety and costs of complementary medicine.
  • To be neither promotional nor derogatory but to struggle for objectivity.
  • To promote analytical thinking in this area.
  • To maximise the benefit and minimise the risk of complementary medicine for the patient.

Research topics

The Department focuses on the most prevalent complementary therapies in the UK:

  • acupuncture
  • herbalism (phytotherapy)
  • homoeopathy
  • manipulative therapies (osteopathy and chiropractic)
  • other therapies are also included, particularly if funding is available.

A full list of about 400 articles and 10 books published so far can be obtained on request. A summary of the most relevant results entitled ‘The evidence so far’ is also available against a small fee.

FACT - Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies

FACT

FACT, Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies, is a review journal edited by this Department and published by the Pharmaceutical Press, London. FACT aims to present the evidence on complementary medicine in an analytical and impartial manner. In these days of evidence-based (orthodox) medicine, we feel it is important that complementary medicine should be judged by the same rigorous standards, creating 'evidence-based complementary medicine'.
