Heart rate capabilities improved by exercise programme

Patients having a reduced supply of blood (ischaemic heart disease) have a less favourable prognosis due in part to their reduced heart rate.

Physical exercise, although not proven, is definitely associated with modifying these risk factors. Researchers at the Department of Physical Therapy, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden examined how exercise could increase physical capacity and heart rate in elderly patients recovering from an acute coronary event.

ECG recordings were taken from 65 patients over 3 months. At the 3 month follow-up, exercise tolerance and exercise capability was found to have increased substantially in the training group than in those not practising the exercises. The day and night-time heart rates were also found to have increased significantly in the training group.

The result of this study confirm that carrying out a regular aerobic training programme can alter and significantly improve exercise capacity, modify heart rate variability leading to a more favourable prognosis in patients recovering from an acute coronary event.
