Diet & Nutrition Vitamin B1


What is Vitamin B1?
Vitamin B1 (otherwise called 'Thiamin') was the vitamin responsible for preventing the disease 'Beriberi'. Beriberi was a disease rife throughout Asia, brought on by eating a diet of refined, white rice, where all the nutritional content of the outer layers of the rice was discarded.

  • Helps maintain healthy nervous system
  • Necessary for healthy mucous membranes

Signs of deficiency

  • Loss of appetite
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Depression
  • Tender muscles
  • Pins & needles, numbness in legs
  • Beriberi (in excessive deficiency)
