Selenium & Breast Cancer
A
Study of trace elements in breast cancer
Researchers
in Taiwan studied the association between oxidative stress and trace
elements in women with breast cancer. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was
found in the serum of breast cancer patients using high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) and trace elements by atomic absorption
spectrophotometry.
It was found that the lipid peroxidation in
the serum of the breast cancer patients was significantly increased.
Concentrations of zinc and iron remained unchanged but the mean
level of serum copper in the breast cancer patient group were lower.
This confirms other research which
demonstrates that selenium and other trace elements can offer
significant help for patients being treated for breast cancer.
