Environmental Health Issues  Water

The source of pollution

  • Nitrates, Fertilisers and pesticides used in agriculture wash into our streams and ponds
  • Chlorine (added at the water treatment works) kills some bacteria, but taints and degrades the taste
  • Hazardous contaminants leak from tanks and seep from refuse and disposal landfills
  • Chemical effluent, toxic substances and industrial wastes pollute rivers and other water courses.
  • Aluminium sulphate (added at the water treatment works) can aggravate health problems
  • Leaky old lead distribution pipework - mainly Victorian, make a further and unwelcome contribution to water pollution
