Allergy Sufferers Self Help Advice

* Vacuum Your Mattress, upholstery and soft furnishing regularly with a high filtration vacuum cleaner. If you install Dynomite dust mite protected carpets in your home, these will prevent dust mite infestation. However, they will still benefit from regular vacuum cleaning to remove any dust and pet dander present. We recommend cleaners which are fitted with a medical "S" class filter such as the Electrolux Air Clean Power System.

* Use protective barrier systems for your bedding. These are now available from chemists and other retail outlets. Barrier systems prevent allergy sized particles from transferring in to the sleeping environment.

* Wash sheets, pillow cases, blankets and duvet covers regularly. A Hot wash (55c+) will ensure that the dust mite eggs are killed as well as the mites.

* Dust with a dampened cloth instead of a dry one. Dry dusting tends to propel dust containing mites and their allergens into the air.

* Ensure that the house is kept well ventilated, especially in the bedrooms. This stops the build up of humidity which enables the mite to thrive.

* Boil wash children’s soft toys which are taken to bed. Alternatively, bag them and put them in the freezer. Either action will kill and dust mites which can inhabit these toys in large numbers.

* At least once a month you should air your mattress thoroughly. If it’s cold and dry then air the mattress outside as dust mites can not survive in these conditions. Leave the bed turned down as a matter of routine.

* You may find that your pets aggravate your condition through exposure to their hair, dander, saliva and urine. The most effective solution is to find a new home for your pet, but if this is not desired then confine your pet to a specific area of your home (not bedrooms or main living areas) that is easily washed and kept clean. Regularly remove pet hair and vacuum thoroughly with a high filteration vacuum cleaner.

* It is very difficult to completely remove allergy triggers from your home, but any one of the actions listed above will improve the quality of you domestic environment. If you can, implement them all.
