Childhood asthma,
eczema and rhintis same in Canada as Europe
The incidence of eczema in
Canada is the same as in Europe according to a report by the
Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, University of
Saskatchewan, Saskatoon.
The report looked at the wide
variations reported between the different regions in Canada of
sufferers of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in the hope that they could
identify particular factors responsible. The researchers
concentrated their efforts in two Canadian centres, Hamilton and
Saskatoon and focused on children in two main age groups; infants
and younger children, below the age of seven, and young
teenagers,13-14 year olds.
The results revealed that of
the younger children, 7 or below, the occurrence of asthma was 17.2%
in Hamilton and 11.2% in Saskatoon; the corresponding rates among
the older children were 19.2% and 12.2% respectively. Rhinitis
occurred in 28.6% in Hamilton and 22.6% in Saskatoon for the younger
group and was 45.8% and 33.8% respectively for the older group. The
occurrence of eczema was slightly higher in Saskatoon in both age
groups.
The research revealed a high
incidence of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in children in the Hamilton
and Saskatoon areas, and the rates were found to be similar to the
incidence found in Western European countries. However, further
studies are necessary to understand the high rates in these two
regions.
