well with pine or valerian oil in the bath
Herbal baths can aid sleep according to
German researchers. A study into the therapeutic effects of herbal
baths investigated the effects of whirl baths with plain water or
with water
containing pine oil or valerian. The
researchers were particularly interested in the effects on muscle
pain and disturbed sleep.
Thirty out-patients with generalized
fibromyalgia participated in the study. The patients were each given
a series of ten baths over a period of four weeks.
All details concerning general pain and
general well-being, change of pain, and occurrence of disturbed
sleep were recorded before and after each bath. The number of tender
points was assessed by palpating the painful area.
The results of the study showed that plain water baths modified the
pain intensity, but the herbal baths also improved the patients'
sense of well-being and sleep.
The report concluded that herbal baths
offer significant, quantifiable benefits for patients suffering from
fibromyalgia including pain relief, relaxation and sleep.
