Glue Ear
(Otitis)
What
is a Glue ear?
Glue ear (otherwise
known as Otitis media) is an inflammation of the middle ear. This acute
infection effects the middle ear cavity causing reddening and outward
bulging of the eardrum, which may rupture. Abnormal function of the
auditory (Eustachian) tube appears to be the most important mechanism in
the origin of middle ear disease. This allows bacteria from the
nasopharynx, which are a primary cause of middle ear infection, to enter
the middle ear. Hearing loss is by far the most prevalent complication of
otitis media.
What
causes Glue ear?
Glue ear is a build up of sticky fluid in the middle ear, which can
impair hearing. It is usually caused by a chronic infection
affecting the middle ear, but it can also be brought on following
allergies or exposure to draughts.
