Dietary
& Nutritional factors in Migraine
Evidence shows that many migraines are frequently triggered by
certain foods. It may therefore be advisable to follow an elimination diet, meaning you
should only eat those foods least likely to bring on an allergic reaction such as brown
rice, rice flour, puffed rice, cooked fruits (not citrus), and simple cooked vegetables.
Your diet should definitely exclude foods which experience shows are most likely to
provoke an attack such as, cheese, chocolate, red wine, wheat, corn, eggs, milk,
shellfish, citrus fruits, coffee, tomatoes and strawberries. If after this elimination
diet you have not had an attack for a while it is a promising indication that food allergy
may indeed be responsible for your migraines. To confirm this, re-introduce each one of
the suspect foods into your diet every two days. At the first sign of an attack you will
have found the culprit!! This sounds easy but, in fact, takes a great deal of dedication
although well worth it. A study published in The Lancet has established that 93% of
long-term sufferers can obtain relief by eliminating offending foods from their diet.

Low Blood Sugar
& Migraine
At the University of Missouri, research has shown that people
who suffer from migraine, frequently suffer from hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) as well.
This comes with a wide-ranging list of other symptoms including fatigue, irritability,
indigestion, breathlessnes and blurred vision. The condition can be diagnosed with a
glucose tolerance test which identifies any abnormal over-reaction to glucose. An
over-reaction brings about a severe drop in the blood sugar level and symptomatic headache
or migraine can result.

Magnesium
& Migraine
People who suffer from hypglycaemia have also
been shown to have a magnesium deficiency. If you are a migraine sufferer,
try including more magnesium-rich foods in your diet. Magnesium is found in
fresh green vegetables, whole grains, nuts and yeast extracts.
