Pancreatitis
xxxxx
What
is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Alcohol intake or
gallbladder disease is often the cause of pancreatitis.
What
are the symptoms?
Symptoms include epigastric pain radiating to the back. There can be
associated feelings of nausea and vomiting. The abdomen can be extremely
tender and there may be a rapid pulse rate.
In long-term disease, the absorption of fat is
affected leading to diarrhoea with greasy and pale stools. Diabetes can
develop if enough of the pancreas is damaged due to lack of insulin being
produced.
Treatment
Chronic cases are advised to stop consuming alcohol. Supplements of
pancreatic enzymes and a low-fat diet may also be recommended.
