An oriental herbal
extract Clinacanthus Nutans (Bi Phaya Yaw) has been found to be helpful
for people suffering shingles (varicella-zoster virus). A study con-ducted
at the department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health in
Thailand looked into the efficacy of a topical formulation of Clinacanthus
Nutans extract in the treatment of shingles. Fifty one patients with
varicella-zoster virus infection participated in the study in which the
formulation was applied five times daily for 7-14 days or until the
lesions healed. There were no side effects of the study medication and all
of the patients responded favourably to the treatment.
