The reasoning that acne is caused by dairy foods such as milk is unproven and a common myth amongst acne sufferers. There are three main reasons as to why this is believed to be true.
The first one is that milk and cheese have casein in it. This a sticky by-product of these dairy products and can block up the flow of blood in the body and even dirty the blood, causing an extra strain on various body systems. Whilst this may exacerbate an acne condition it is by no means a cause of acne. Cessation of dairy and blood purification treatments are generally ineffective acne cures.
The next reason why dairy is often cited as being the cause of acne is that dairy products often have hormones and antibiotics in them. This is from when the cow was given hormones to speed up growth and antibiotics to stop the spread of disease in overcrowded farm factories. While this may aggravate an acne condition and is generally not good for the health of a human being the low quantities of these factors in the milk make it a low risk acne factor. Acne sufferers may want to swap dairy sources to organic dairy to avoid this risk, but they will observe little difference to their acne condition by doing so.
The last reason why dairy is often cited as a cause of acne is the lactose factor. Most adult humans are lactose intolerant due to years of milk and dairy consumption, which wasn?t designed to be consumed by humans for such a long period of time (if at all!). However being lactose intolerant and consuming lactose does not cause acne. It may cause indigestion and put a strain on the digestive system but this won?t cause acne. It may aggravate the situation because if you have acne your body systems are already malfunctioning and under strain. One way to counter-act this without giving up dairy is to take the digestive enzyme lactase when consuming dairy as this will significantly aid in the digestion of lactose.
Making the body systems more efficient can help treat acne and one way to do this is by cutting out dairy from your diet. However, cessation of consumption of dairy has not been proven to cure acne, although it is a common first attempt by the acne sufferer to cure their condition through dietary changes. Unfortunately this can make things worse as acne sufferers may cut out dairy without getting the nutrients provided for by that food from other things added to their diet, causing a nutrient imbalance and an actual worsening of their acne. My advice to anyone considering cutting dairy from their diet if they really like it is to swap to organic sources and take the enzyme lactase instead. This will offset the bad aspects of dairy but still allow consumption of it.
