Are the Accutane Side Effects Worth It

By: Sarah Scott

The Accutane side effects that are evident in many women who take this drug to help fight severe acne need to be known beforehand. The side effects are rather important and when you and your doctor talk about them, you'll have to sign a waiver saying that you understand that what you are taking is that risky.

The fact is, though, that Accutane has shown to help improve severe acne even when other medications including antibiotics have not helped. So, are the Accutane side effects worth the risk?

The question can really only be answered by you. You'll need to insure that you and your doctor really analyze what they are as well as how serious your condition is. You will need to weigh them against the possibility that they will help you but may also cause you great harm.

Here are some of the Accutane side effects that you'll need to think about.

* Birth Defects: In many individuals, birth defects are evident in women who take Accutane and are pregnant or become pregnant while on it. You will need to be completely off of the medication for over a month before you should try to conceive as well.

* Mental Issues Including Suicide: Depression is often associated with individuals who are taking or even those who stop taking Accutane. Other serious mental conditions can also result. Irritability, loss of pleasure, anxiety, social and sleeping troubles are only some of the Accutane side effects that are attributed to mental issues.

So, is this the right medication for you? Some doctors will not prescribe the medication at all. If your doctor is willing to talk with you about it, then really examine if you should take this risk or if there are any other possible solutions to your severe acne. In most mild to moderate cases, it will not be considered at all. The Accutane side effects are quite serious and should be carefully considered.
