Does acne affect those with dry skin types?
Both acne and dry skin are undesirable skin problems and both have unique characteristics. Typically, acne appears as a cause of concern for teenagers whereas on the other hand, dry skin tends to appear only when one gets older.
But in order to fully understand whether acne will occur in dry skin, one ought to know the causes of how acne begins and the different factors that lead to the forming of such bad skin spots.
Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder in which the sebaceous gland associated with a hair follicle secretes excessive oil. The excess oil on our skin causes our skin to inflame and produce unsightly lesion that is usually both reddish and obtrusive.
The main reason why acne is more common in puberty is because during such a period, the hormone is less stable and our skin system becomes imbalanced. Our skin is most affected by such anomalous reaction, and acne becomes more dominant during such a time.
Good news is that for people with dry skin, sebaceous glands are usually less active. This makes severe acne unlikely though it may still happen for some. However, those with combination skin type (i.e. oily and dry skin) will find that their acne is usually at areas such as the nose, forehead and chin. That is because this T-zone area is usually the oiliest part of the skin.
Surprisingly, acne can appear during winter time when our skin loses its moisture and becomes dry. Because of the lack of blood circulation, our skin is deprived of the nourishment and moisture it needs. This causes the skin protective barrier to lower its defense and bad impurities have the chance to hurt our skin. Such imbalance may cause the sebaceous glands to be blocked, leading to acne.
Our skin is one of the most important organs of our body. Good skin care habits are important if one is to be free from acne or dry skin. For those with dry skin types, one is less likely to get acne. However, wrong use of skin care products ? such as soaps, perfumes, antiperspirants ? can further aggravates one?s skin condition, be it acne or dry skin.
