Most of us had suffered with acne during puberty, which in itself was bad enough. Now that your an adult one would expect that this horrible condition would of cleared up many years ago. This is not the case for so many who continue to suffer from adult acne. Having acne as an adult can be even more traumatizing to a person than when those who had it during puberty. Why? Because most adults who have acne also suffered with it when they were younger. For some, their acne never ever went away no matter what they did. Not all adults who have acne had it when they were younger however, but for some reason the acne waited until now to cause many of us ongoing misery.
Acne is most often caused by the secretion of androgens. During puberty, this is when the androgens are first secreted, which is why so many teens and preteens become affected with this condition. These sex hormones are also secreted during adulthood as well and while this secretion does not affect the majority of adults, there are many that suffer. Another probable cause of adult acne maybe poor dietary habits or a lack of exercise. Making a simple change in one's diet or physical activity can make all the difference.
Although androgens are male sex hormones, they are also secreted by females. Basically, androgens stimulate the production of oil from the skin's oil glands and if these oil glands become overactive and blocked, there will be a build up in the gland from the oil which will swell thus causing the acne. In more severe cases these glands will burst into the skin and will produce cysts.
There may be many reasons why adults suffer from acne so it is difficult to pin it down to just one thing. Stress however can play a big part of why adults seem to get this condition and for me this rings true. I find that if I am under high amounts of stress then sure enough, just like clockwork I start to break out. It also seems to be a big trigger for women who suffer from acne. If this applies to you then you may want to try some basic stress-relief techniques. Make sure you're eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.
On a final note, I would suggest that if you suffer from adult acne and you have tried changing your diet, exercise and reducing your stress level and still can't get your acne under control, then speak to your dermatologist to find a solution that will work for you.
