What is Acne and Ways to Treat It

By: Jason I Lewis

Acne is a problem that about 80% of all people will deal with from time to time. Acne is a blockage of the pores by dirt, skin oils, and or dried skin. This blockage usually creates a hard, red lump followed by a black or white head that will form later on the surface of the skin. A common misconception is that a blackhead is the color it is due to dirt, the truth is it is caused by melanin, your skins own pigment reacting with the oxygen outside your body.

While acne is treatable, it is sometimes difficult to control break outs and even more so to clear them up once your have had one. Keeping the skin of the affected area clean is one way to combat break outs. A clear skin regimen is another. There are many acne products on the market today to help keep your skin clean and free of break outs. Many of these products are dermatologist tested and approved. Check with a dermatologist before beginning any new product as some may result in worsening of the problem.

Acne is not only unsightly, it also can be devastating to a person's self image and self esteem. It is also usually very painful. If all other treatments fail, it may be best to speak with a qualified dermatologist about remedies and medications available on the market to combat acne. A dermatologist will better help you to understand the problem and will know the best medications for your type of acne.

Not all remedies will work for every person. There are several types of acne and they each may have to be treated much differently from one another.
