Cold Sores
What are cold sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus
(type 1) and are transmitted orally or via respiratory routes. The virus
produces infection in the mouth, gums and the skin. The virus lays dormant
in the nerve ganglia and recurs following periods of stress.
Which factors can
trigger cold sores?
These include ultraviolet radiation - exposure to
the sun, hormonal changes, infection and emotional stress. A healthy
immune system is of paramount importance for the control and prevention of
cold sores.
Are there any dietary or
lifestyle recommendations?
Avoiding foods such as almonds, bacon, carob,
peanuts, seeds and cereals which contain the amino acid, arginine, which
is believed to help growth of the herpes simplex virus. Direct sunlight
should also be avoided. The supplement Lysine appears to slow replication
of the virus.
