What
is Colic?
This is commonly seen in children between the
ages of 2 and 6 months. During an attack the baby screams and is often
inconsolable, drawing its knees up over its stomach as though it had
stomach ache.
Colic is thought to result from overactive bowel
contractions instead of the smooth peristaltic movements experienced by
adults. Wind may exacerbate the problem by becoming trapped in the
intestine and distending the bowel.
How
long do the attacks last?
Attacks can vary anywhere between 15 minutes to
several hours.
Treatment
Effective treatments exist in homeopathy, herbal
and Chinese medicine. The herb fennel is said to have a relaxing and
calming effect.
Weaning a baby too early increases the chances of
colic. Sucking is a comfort for colicky babies and provides a distraction
from the pain.
Rhythmic rocking or walking with the baby can
also be soothing.
