What is cystitis?
Cystitis is an inflammation of the wall of the
urinary bladder. This commonly leads to symptoms such as burning and pain
on urination and increased frequency of urination.
Which factors can
trigger cystitis?
Cystitis may be caused by a bacterial infection,
in particular, E.coli, chemicals or mechanical injury.
Treatments commonly used
in cystitis
Antibiotics are the first choice, however they do
not help if the problem reoccurs. Sometimes overlooked is the possibility
of Candida albicans, a yeast overgrowth made worse from antibiotics.
Fructo-oligosaccharides and acidophilus can help to re-establish a
friendly gut environment, which keeps the yeast at bay.
Are there any dietary or
lifestyle recommendations?
Cranberry juice and other plants of the Vaccinium
family help to prevent E.coli sticking to the bladder. This could also
include cranberry extract, which provides a more concentrated source of
the active ingredient. The drinking of plenty of fluids is also highly
recommended - at least 5 pints daily to help flush out the system. Try to
avoid sugary foods, refined carbohydrates and alcohol. Perfumed soaps and
toiletries should also be avoided during washing.
