Haemorrhoids
What are haemorrhoids?
Varicosities of the rectal
veins are known as haemorrhoids (piles). They are caused from either a
genetic weakness of the veins, pregnancy or from prolonged periods of
standing or sitting.
Initially contained within
the anus (first degree), they gradually enlarge until they prolapse or
extend outward on defecation (second degree) and finally remain prolapsed
all the time (third degree).
What factors contribute
to haemorrhoids?
Haemorrhoids may be caused
by constipation as the repeated straining during defecation increases
blood pressure leading to weakening of the veins. Constipation is related
to diets low in fibre.
What treatments or
dietary and lifestyle recommendations are suggested?
The best way of treating
haemorrhoids is prevention. A diet high in fibre is crucial for proper
bowel movements. Bulking agents such as psyllium seed and oat bran due to
their mild laxative action, plus vegetables, fruits and grains greatly
help to reduce the straining.
