Are you a Perfect Candidate for Laser Hair Removal

By: Paul Ghossain

Laser hair removal has come a long way in terms of its effectiveness. However, it is still far from perfect. One of the biggest downsides to laser hair removal is that the results are never the same for everybody. Some people have found this type of hair removal method to be great whilst others have regretted ever spending the money on it. In order for this treatment to be successful, you have to make sure that you are the right candidate for it.

So what makes a person the right candidate for laser hair removal?

In order to answer this question, you need to first understand a bit of the basics of how laser hair removal actually works.

Hair removal by laser occurs when the laser energy targets something called melanin which in turn is the actual pigment that gives hair its color. The reason for targeting melanin is because it absorbs the laser energy and converts it into heat. The heat then in turn destroys the hair germinative which happens to be the structure that produces hair growth. If enough heat is applied to the germinative, your hair will cease to grow again.

You are now probably wondering what all of this has to do with you being the right candidate or not. The problem is that melanin is also found in the skin and is the reason for your skin color. That means that one would need to have enough laser energy to bypass the melanin in your skin so that enough of it can be absorbed by the melanin in your hair in order to produce enough heat in order to destroy the germinative.

So, let us think about this for a while shall we;

The darker the skin, the more melanin there is in your skin. This makes it more difficult for the laser treatment to work. The darker the hair, the more melanin there is in your hair. This makes it easier for the laser treatment to work. Therefore, the perfect candidate would be someone that has light colored skin and dark hair. This makes it easy for the laser to go directly to the melanin in your hair without loosing any of its energy on the way.

This leads us to one more point; if you decide to go for laser hair removal, make sure that you don't do any tanning at least two weeks from the time of your first treatment. You see, by tanning, you are allowing the sun to help your skin produce extra melanin, which is the reason why your skin becomes darker.

So, are you the perfect candidate?
