Transcendental Meditation
reduces high blood pressure
Transcendental Meditation has been
shown to be twice as effective as other relaxing therapies in patients who
are suffering from high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is considered
the number one health problem among adult African Americans, having a
disproportionate rate of mortality compared with white Americans. A study
in the US examined the effects of Transcendental Meditation and muscle
relaxation on older African Americans suffering from mild raised blood
pressure.
Two hundred and thirteen African
American men and women all with raised blood pressure were given either
Transcendental Meditation or progressive muscle relaxation as well as
education on how to modify their lifestyle.
The study revealed that patients who
received Transcendental Meditation experienced a reduction in their
systolic blood pressure of 10.7mm Hg and diastolic pressure of 6.4mm Hg,
whereas progressive muscle relaxation lowered the systolic pressure by
4.7mm Hg. and the diastolic by 3.3mm Hg.
The researchers concluded that
Transcendental Meditation was almost twice as effective as the progressive
muscle relaxation and could be considered a therapeutic option in reducing
high blood pressure.
