Capsaicin
- Alleviating pain
For
centuries, capsaicin has been used as a remedy for pain and scientists
have now discovered how and why it works. Exposure to capsaicin activates
sensory neurons in orthodromic or pain sensation and local reddening and
oedema. It has been successfully used to control pain in postherpetic
neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy and other neuropathic pains. The results
also show that it can help arthritic pain, and cluster headaches can be
prevented by repeated application of capsaicin to the mucous membranes in
the nose. It appears to offer one of the most promising remedies for pain
relief of localised pain syndromes.
