Oregano
is a perennial pungent herb of the mint family which possesses strong
aromatic leaves used in seasoning. Called 'Joy of the mountain' in Greek,
Oregano is classified as a 'Generally Recognised as Safe' food additive.
It is reported to possess stronger antimicrobial properties than onion,
ginger, black pepper, cumin, rosemary, mustard, basil, cumin, coriander,
dill or sage when tested against a variety of common molds and fungi.
A number of yeasts commonly
found in foods and the environment are often detected on the various
mucosal surfaces of the body. A prominent example is Candida albicans
which is commonly found in the respiratory tract, genito-urinary tract,
and stomach.
