Latin name: Aegle marmelos (L.)
Correa ex Schultz.
Sanskrit / Indian name: Bilva
The fruit aids the
healing of ulcerated intestinal surfaces and is used for dysentery,
diarrhea and cholera due to it's carminative and digestive qualities. It
contains anthelmintic, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties
helps against Salmonella and Vibrio cholera.
The plant and it's extract
are used as:

- for intermittent fever
- for diarrhea
- for snake bite
- for fish poisoning
- an anthelmintic
- an antibacterial
- a hypoglycemic
- an antiviral
- a cardiac stimulant

Anthelmintic, hypoglycemic,
antidiarrheal and antiviral are the predominant pharmacological effects of
the plant.
When isolated from the
fruit, marmelosin exhibited anthelmintic qualities against hookworm (Nippostrongylus
muris) infection on animals. Tests on experimentally ankylostoma-infected
rats with Marmelosin found it to contain major anti-hookworm properties.
