Indian Gooseberry research
Indian gooseberry reduces
serum cholesterol levels
A study conducted at
the Department of Foods & Nutrition, Lady Irwin College, University of
Delhi, New Delhi, India has demonstrated that the Indian Gooseberry (amla-Emblica
officinalis, Gaertn.) can reduce high serum cholesterol levels. The effect
on total serum cholesterol and its lipo-protein fractions of
supplementation of the diet with the Indian gooseberry was studied in
normal and hypercholesterolaemic men aged 35-55 years.
The fresh gooseberry was eaten(un-cooked) for a
period of 28 days. Both normal and hypercholesterolaemic participants
showed a decrease in cholesterol levels. However, two weeks after
withdrawing the supplement, the total serum cholesterol levels of the
hypercholesterolaemic subjects rose significantly almost to initial
levels.
