Remedies Rose
Rose Rosa spp.
Roses are a group of herbaceous
shrubs found in temperate regions throughout both hemispheres. In
Ayurvedic medicine, roses are considered cooling and a tonic for the mind.
The oil is highly prized and extremely expensive and is one of the most
important oils in aromatherapy.
The parts used are the petals,
flowers, rosehips and essential oil from R.canina,
R. laevigata, R. centifolia, R.
rugosa, R. gallica, R. damascena
Constituents
Volatile oil, vitamins C, B, E, K,
tannins. Rose oil contains some 300 chemical constituents
Character
Chinese herbal
medicine regards it as sweet, astringent, generally either neutral or
slightly cooling
Action
It traditionally acts
as an antidepressant, aphrodisiac, digestive, stimulant, expectorant,
increase bile production, cleansing, expectorant, antibacterial,
antiviral, kidney tonic, blood tonic and menstrual regulator
Application
Rosehips
Tincture It is traditionally used as
an astringent for diarrhoea, to relieve colic, or as a component in a
cough remedy
Syrups It can be added to cough
medicines
Essential oil
Lotion It can be applied with 1ml
lady’s mantle tincture in 10ml of rosewater for vaginal itching
Cream A few drop can be added for
dry skin
Oil 2 drops of oil can be added in
the bath water for depression, grief or insomnia
Massage 2ml of rose oil can be added
to 20ml almond oil to relieve stress, or sluggish digestion
Petals
Tincture 3ml up to three times a day
can be traditionally taken for diarrhoea. It can be combined with lady’s
mantle, white deadnettle for irregular or heavy menstruation.
Cautions
Rose oil is non-toxic and can be
taken internally, but seek professional advice first. Use
only the rose species listed here and not the garden hybrids
