Plant Remedies  Willow


Willow Salix alba

White willow was traditionally used for fevers. In modern herbalism only the bark is generally used. It is prescribed for many inflammatory conditions, including rheumatism and arthritis. It is also used to help control fever and relieve neuralgia, headaches and pain in general.

Constituents

Salicin, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides

Character

Chinese herbal medicine regards it as cool, dry and slightly bitter

Action

The bark is traditionally used as an antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, reduce heat, antihydrotic, analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, bitter and digestive tonic.

Application
Bark

Fluid extract This is traditionally used for rheumatic conditions, headaches and neuralgia.

Tincture This is traditionally used for fevers.

Decoction This is traditionally used for feverish chills and headaches, or as part of arthritic treatment

Leaves

Infusion This is traditionally drunk after meals for digestive problems
