Professional Associations  Acupuncture

British Acupuncture Council

The BAcC was formed in June 1995 by the unification of five member groups of the Council for Acupuncture (the British Acupuncture Association & Register, The Chung San Acupuncture Society, The International Register of Oriental Medicine, The Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Traditional Acupuncture Society). It was unanimously agreed by the members that one body should represent and govern professionally qualified acupuncturists in all aspects of their work.

The British Acupuncture Council maintains standards of education, ethics, discipline and Codes of Practice to ensure the health and safety of the public at all times. It is also committed to promoting research and enhancing the role that traditional acupuncture can play in the maintenance of the public’s health and well-being. The BacC believes that anyone who wishes to provide acupuncture treatment should undertake an extensive training, regardless of any other qualifications or prior western medical training, and does not endorse short courses.

All practitioner members of the BAcC have undergone a thorough training in traditional acupuncture diagnosis and treatment, comprising a course of study lasting at least two years full time, or the part-time equivalent. Western medical training appropriate to the practice of acupuncture is considered an essential component of such courses, as are both clinical acupuncture training and practical experiential work. Training courses are monitored by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board (BAAB), an independent body closely allied to BacC, which was established in 1990 to provide Professional Accreditation in this field.

British Medical Acupuncture Society

The British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS) represents medically qualified doctors who practise acupuncture alongside conventional medicine. The society was formed in 1980 with only a handful of members since when its membership has grown to over 1700. The BMAS supports and encourages research into acupuncture so that we can all benefit from the most effective acupuncture treatments possible. Acupuncture is not considered appropriate for all conditions and practitioners are discouraged from making claims for the value of acupuncture where there is no supporting evidence. The majority of members are General Practitioners, many of whom offer acupuncture on the NHS. For details of medically qualified acupuncturists in your area.
