Chiropractic
Chiropractors diagnose, treat
and manage conditions affecting the spine and joints, using manipulative
techniques knows as adjustments.
The Body has the capability of healing
itself. If, through accident or lifestyle, a joint or vertebra becomes
slightly misaligned, it can affect the nervous system, causing pain,
discomfort or even disease. Chiropractors restore normal alignment and
allow self healing.
The British Chiropractic Association has
been established since 1925 and now represents over 800 UK chiropractors.
It has strict codes of conduct and ethics. Only chiropractors who have
trained for at least four years full time at an accredited college can
become members.

The General
Chiropractic Council (GCC) is a UK-wide statutory body with regulatory
powers, established by the Chiropractors Act 1994. It has three main duties:
- To protect the public by
establishing and operating a scheme of statutory regulation for
chiropractors, similar to the schemes for other health professionals
such as medical doctors and dentists
- To ensure the development
of the profession of chiropractic, using a model of continuous
improvement in practice
- To promote the profession
of chiropractic so that its contribution to the health of the nation is
understood and recognised
The GCC Register opened on
the 15th June 1999. Any person in the UK describing himself as any kind of
chiropractor must register with the GCC within the two year transitional
period following the opening of the Register. After 14 June 2001 the title
of chiropractor will be protected and it will be a criminal offence, liable
to prosecution, to describe oneself as a chiropractor without being
registered.
Through its Education
Committee the GCC sets UK-wide standards of training and competence,
ensuring that chiropractors are properly qualified. It will oversee all
post-graduate education and help patients by ensuring that all chiropractors
keep up to date and continuously improve their standards of practice.

McTimoney Chiropractic Association
The McTimoney Chiropractic Association
governs the Code of Ethics of those practitioners trained at the McTimoney
Chiropractic College. It maintains a register of practitioners and issues
a directory of McTimoney Chiropractors, copies of which can be obtained
from the above address.
McTimoney Chiropractic is a
gentle, whole-body treatment which safely restores a patient’s total
structural integrity. Chiropractic is also a preventative therapy, and
when used in this way, greatly improves bodily health and well being,
avoiding long spells of discomfort. McTimoney Chiropractors use only their
hands to make adjustments to the bones of the body. The key to the success
of the adjustments is in the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they
are performed.

Scottish
Chiropractic Association
The Scottish Chiropractic
Association was founded in 1979 by seven chiropractors practicing in
Scotland. At that time action was urgently needed to prevent the threat of
non-qualified manipulators and bonesetters establishing themselves as
chiropractors and forming an Association.
The Association has grown over the years
currently having 126 active members.
The Association provides the public with
the security of a Code of Ethics and Memorandum and Articles that the
membership must abide by. All the members have a certain level of
undergraduate training, with continuing professional development being
encouraged. The Association provides information leaflets and booklets for
the public.
