Professional Associations  Hypnotherapy

British Institute of Hypnotherapy

Numerous organisations and associations exist specializing in this form of treatment and there are many practitioners who operate independently. Some are extremely competent while others, unfortunately, fall very short of even the minimum requirements. Obviously it is helpful if one can be recommended by a friend, a previous client, or your Doctor, but as this is not usually the case, one way of ensuring you make the right choice is to approach the British Institute of Hypnotherapy, (BIH), which is an association of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists committed to high standards of ethical practice and professional competence.

We believe that people can and should have unrestricted access to the means by which the quality of their lives may be improved, but we also believe they have a right to expect the practitioner to be competent and committed to the care and well being of his/her clients. To this end, any practitioner who applies for membership of the BIH is required to provide proof of training to a suitable level before being accepted. They are also expected to work within the boundaries of the Institutes Code of Practice (which is available for inspection by the public), and it is a condition of membership that they have full professional indemnity insurance to cover. They are also made aware of the fact that the BIH operates a complaints procedure.

You may be assured that strict confidentiality is observed at all times, within the rule of law. Under no circumstances will any communication be entered into with any third party unless it is with the permission of the client.

The Hypnotherapy Society

The Hypnotherapy Research Society [UK] was inaugurated in May 1997 and is a new and independent venture dedicated to encourage quality research into clinical hypnosis and hypnotherapy. It will provide a source of intelligent material for the further professional education of members who are keen to learn from fellow practitioners and researchers. The Society is the brainchild of a group consisting of medical doctors, psychologists, psychotherapists and clinical hypnotherapists who regularly use clinical hypnotherapy in their treatment of their clients and patients. The Society was first proposed during late 1994 after which we commenced collating a nominal roll of hypnotherapy practitioners who advertised their professional services throughout Great Britain and Europe. We are also affiliated with the HRS in the United States.

The purpose of the Society is to encourage practising hypnotherapists and researchers of clinical hypnosis to write, or consider writing, papers of their theories, experiences and any practical research they have undertaken in the field of clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy. We consider that such research can eventually be used to up-date existing theories and methodologies, much of which is now very dated and in need of a fresh perspective. We propose that members' papers and appropriate research theses should be collated and those of merit published by the Society for the benefit of all members in the form of a prestigious annual Journal. The Journal will aim, in a short space of time, to become a professional "peer review" journal. In addition, more general newsletters will be issued with Society news, professional developments, reviews and other matters of general interest to members. The newsletters will be less formal than the more prestigious Society Journal. The Society has drawn together an experienced team of experts to further this aim while, at the same time, it will endeavour to enhance the professional interests of all clinical hypnotherapists.
