Just 20 years ago, there were literally a handful of people practising
Shiatsu in this country. In those early days very few people had heard of
Shiatsu let alone experienced the benefits of treatment. But from that
humble beginning the Shiatsu Society (UK) has flourished and grown to
become a recognised and respected independent professional association
throughout the UK. Currently membership stands at around 1800, with 700 of
the members being registered practitioners (MRSS).
Aims of the Society
Established in 1981, the original aims were to facilitate communication
within the field of Shiatsu and to inform the public of the benefits of
this natural form of healing. Since then, the Society has grown to form a
strong nationwide network linking interested individuals, students,
practitioners and teachers.
During the last 15 years the need to protect the reputation of Shiatsu
as a valid therapy and to protect the needs of the public became apparent.
The Society took on the self-regulating role of maintaining professional
standards of practice and training and has now become the main
professional association for practitioners, teachers and training
establishments within the UK.
