Introduction to
Transcendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
Transcendental Meditation, as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is a simple
technique which is practised for 15-20 minutes twice each day sitting
comfortably in a chair with the eyes closed.
During this time the mind settles down in a natural and spontaneous way
until the finest level of thinking is transcendedı and the mind is left
in a state of deep restful alertness.
This experience is deeply refreshing for the mind (as if you are taking a
mental bath) and afterwards you feel clearer and brighter.
In addition, as the mind settles down, the body also achieves a unique
state of deep rest, which is quite unlike the rest achieved during a nightıs
sleep. This allows deep-rooted stresses which are responsible for a
high proportion of illnesses to be released in a natural way, and
the body to be normalised.
Research on the health benefits of Transcendental Meditation show that the
experience is characterised by deep physiological rest, increased
orderliness of brain functioning, and features directly opposite to the
effects of stress.
People who practise TM regularly go to the doctor about half as much as
controls, and have significantly reduced health care costs.
TM is particularly helpful for stress-related conditions, such as
migraine, high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, abuse of alcohol and
cigarettes, angina and asthma.
