Midwives rate complementary therapies
Midwives are amongst the highest users
of complementary therapies in the health care services, according to a
study by the National Health Service Confederation.
Midwives in the United Kingdom are
autonomous, independent practitioners and the lead professionals for
normal pregnancy and childbirth. Over
the years, midwives have recognised the increasing interest by patients
for alternative and complementary therapies and the benefits that these
therapies have to offer, particularly in palliative care. In response,
back in 1988, midwives established the Complementary Therapies in
Maternity Care National Forum.
As Midwives are in a prime position to
introduce complementary medicine to patients, the UK Central Council for
Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Visiting is highlighting the use of
Complementary Therapies in the Maternity Care National Forum.
Education and information play key roles
in the integration of the many complementary therapies, and midwives are
providing women with greater satisfaction and more choice from the
childbirth experience. It is also recognised as important to get
government commitment and involvement to ensure the success of this
project.
