Acupuncture schools train prospective candidates to become licensed acupuncturists (L.Ac.). Professional degree offerings include Master?s in Acupuncture; Master?s of Science in Acupuncture; Master?s of Science in Oriental Medicine; Master?s of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and Oriental Medical Doctor.

Contrary to popular belief, students who enroll in an acupuncture school do not only learn how to insert thin needles into a patient, they learn a comprehensive curriculum in musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology; Oriental medicine history; medical terminology; Chinese Medicine; Diagnostic methods and systems; cell biology; herbal medicine; pathology; biochemistry; physical examination; orthopedic assessments; clinical practice; pharmacology; internal medicine; nutrition; Tui Na; behavioral medicine and other related professional aspects of the field.

On average, acupuncture school courses run about 3-4 years in duration; in addition to clinical internship. While enrolled, acupuncture school students will gain extensive knowledge and skills in acupuncture, Oriental bodywork; Qigong; Chinese herbs; homeopathy; and associated natural healing modalities.

Learning about Five Elements, Yin/Yang and Chi; students will begin to understand the foundation of acupuncture and oriental medicine based on ancient healing applications of the past. In addition, acupuncture school coursework will often entail principles of the four diagnostic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including Wang (observation); Wen (audio-olfaction); Wen (inquiry); and Qie (palpation).

Given the extent of in-depth education that is extended to acupuncture school students, graduates will have gained an all-inclusive foundation into practicing acupuncture to treat common illness, disease and other disorders. They will have effectively learned how to use the needling (acupuncture) technique with respect to epidemiology, and the precision use of acupuncture in accordance with the meridians (energy channels) and its eventual efficacy on restoring Chi balance to bring about overall wellbeing.

There are many accredited acupuncture schools in the United States (and abroad) that promote and teach acupuncture curriculums. Realize too, that many of these acupuncture schools also perform crucial research on Oriental medicine and its usefulness in treating disease and other health ailments.

Though acupuncture is still considered "alternative medicine" here in the United States, it is thought of as mainstream medicine in Eastern civilization and has been known to be quite effective in countless cases. Today, students who desire a non-traditional academic course in health care, may elect to enroll in an acupuncture school where they will not only learn the fundamentals of needling, but will gain an exciting perspective and understanding to Oriental medicine, its history and theories; and how to professionally use natural healing techniques and methods to help patients everywhere.
