Exercise Programs and Weight Loss Getting Started

By: Troy Shanahan

People who are serious about losing weight should realize that exercise programs and weight loss go hand in hand. It is possible to undertake an effective diet that can help you lose weight but, eventually, there is a plateau effect in dieting that occurs after several weeks wherein the body adjusts to the lower intake of calories and does not shed off pounds as easily as in the beginning. Dieting alone is often not enough. This means we should expand our view from just dieting and weight loss to exercise programs and weight loss.

Before you undertake an exercise program for weight loss or simply for staying fit, you should consult a doctor to determine your level of fitness. The doctor will look at your pulse and your blood pressure before he can give you a clean bill of health to begin the kind of exercise program you have in mind. Aside from the doctor?s visit, the other things you should do before launching your fitness program are to make an exercise plan, choose the types of exercise you want to pursue and, if possible, find an exercise buddy.

The Exercise Plan

Making a plan to track your exercise program and weight loss goals is important to be able to measure your progress. It is not as simple as getting out of bed one morning, deciding that you want to get more fit, and jogging as far and for as long as you can. You should put your exercise plan on paper. It should indicate the goals you want to achieve over a certain period of time, and these goals should be goals, not best-case-scenario targets that you can?t possibly meet. Setting unattainable goals can make you feel that all your efforts are going nowhere and discourage you from pursuing your regimen. Better to set small, attainable goals and build your confidence every time you achieve them. The best approach is to start slow. After a month, review your records and see how far you?ve gone.

Walking, Swimming, Cycling and Others

Walking, swimming, jogging, cycling and aerobics are all ideal exercises. Calisthenics works for many others as well while dancing has its own special allure. The thing is to find a set of activities that you enjoy so you won?t end up getting bored. For the sake of variety, it would be ideal to select a host of exercises and vary them according to your mood. But remember, again, to start gradually and don?t overdo it.

Get an Exercise Buddy

If you?ve tried exercising before, then you probably know that having an exercise buddy has some bearing on the success of your exercise program and weight loss regimen. Exercising solo requires so much self-discipline because there are so many distractions pulling at your time. With an exercise buddy, there?s always someone to pull you in the right direction. Failing this, you might want to take a look at those exercise classes as well.
