On The Motivation To Exercise

A new trend consists in making people believe that they should live happy with their bodies, no matter what image of themselves the mirror is reflecting morning after morning. Eventually, many people resign themselves to follow such a fashion, for they lack the motivation to start riding the healthy horse.

What are, essentially, the underlying reasons ? First, the absence of immediate results. Second, the difficulty of the task, at least physically speaking. Last (but not least), a pathological disbelief towards concrete results.

I used to be so out of shape I could not run for longer than ten minutes, and my whole body was quite undevelopped, when someday I decided it was eventually time to start exercising. I started light but kept the training regular and serious (only jogging for the first few months, the gist being that without a proper cardiological condition, nothing can be achieved). The results came very quickly, and I could appreciate them with the help of my chronometer. Month after month, I was growing more enduring and faster than I was before. Physically speaking, my legs were becoming stronger.

When I felt my heart had become enduring enough, I decided to incorporate light weight training into my routines (by "light" you shall read 45 minutes and 3 or 4 times a week; for the jogging, I use to train on average 30 minutes per session). Coupled with a decent diet (nothing draconian or extremist, but contrary to popular belief, you must focus on eating quite a lot when you start pushing weights), I quickly grew firmer, stronger and muscular within a few months (in numerical terms, good noticeable results start to appear clearly after 6 months).

As of today I am in a very good shape, and exercising has become an addiction. The same way money generates more money, a goold shape calls a better shape. However, the good thing to remember is that the keys to success are regularity and severity: if you can talk to your girlfriend or boyfriend while you are jogging, then you're probably not jogging hard enough. If you cannot jog more than 20 minutes, then you're jogging too fast. If your records start to drop for a consistent period of time, then you need to go back to a healthier lifestyle and train harder. No pain, no gain.

The author of this site is a trained mathematician, and has been a full-time resident of France (in Paris and Marseille), New York City and China, where he is still residing and working as a college lecturer. He has retained a keen interest in various fields related to sports, literature, philosophy, psychology and mathematics. As an obvious corollary, his writings are largely dominated by a spirit of logic and obstinate rationalization. Indeed, one of his ultimate quests is the conciliation of logics with emotions.
