What are the Real Benefits of Calisthenics

By: Foras Aje

At times, we may not always have access to the gymnasium or exercise equipments at home. Sometimes we need some form of exercise to strengthen us to be able to workout on our various equipments. Well that?s where Calisthenics come in.

The word "calisthenics" comes from the Greek words 'kallos' for beauty and 'thenos' for strength. The components of this form of exercises aims at achieving those physical attributes, but the methods also influences the emotional and social development of everyone.

They are divided into two groups: aerobic (meaning with oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen)

Aerobic Exercises:

Include such common exercises as jogging, long distance running, swimming, walking, and mild dancing.

In all of these activities there is a constant supply of oxygen and thus can be performed for longer durations of time. They are great for increasing muscular endurance and toning the body.

Anaerobic Exercises:

These are intense exercises which can only be endured for a few moments. They are short bursts of high-energy activities involving the use of muscle groups at high intensities which exceeds the body's capacity to use oxygen to supply energy thus creating an oxygen debt. Consequently the body has to rely on an internal metabolic process for oxygen which leads to a muscular explosion and an eventual increase in size and mass. Other examples of anaerobic exercises are lifting heavy weights, wrestling (thus the huge size of the gorilla!), rope climbing, speed cycling etc.

Aerobic and Anaerobic calisthenics, like Yoga, possess the ability to loosen constitutional encumbrances through various kinds of vibrations and thermal differences which consequently speeds up weight-loss and overall improved muscular tone, endurance and strength.

The latter being the Anaerobic (without oxygen) exercises include isometric, isotonic, isokinetic and eccentric exercises which all combined (of course with the Aerobic exercises such as jogging, walking etc) make for a successful and efficient online fitness training program.

Now to make these methods of exercise even more useful, as stated by the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates who compiled a list of over four hundred herbs and their uses: "Let your food be your medicine as Nature is the healer of all diseases!"

So, if you need a choice of exercise, calisthenics as a foundation could be a wise choice. Heck, it works for millions of people and it surely should work for you.
