Buying a Treadmill That Youll Actually Use

By: Joseph Serpico

Using a treadmill is a great way to get in shape and confers excellent health benefits, and buying a treadmill is one of the best investments you can make for your home gym. However, the primary fear people have when buying a treadmill is that they won't use it. With a little research and forethought, that problem can usually be avoided. Of course, buying your unit is only the beginning, but it's probably the most important step.

The first thing to consider when shopping for a treadmill is your specific fitness goal. A common mistake is assuming that all running or walking surfaces are the same. If you plan to use the treadmill for running, than you should not be considering the least expensive models. You will find options that vary widely in respect to quality, features and power. One of the most important features is the horsepower of the motor; another is the size of the belt. A basic unit is probably ok for walking, but just won't stand up to the rigors of running or jogging.

Decide which features are paramount to you. Does it need to fold? Do you need automated workout programs? A heart rate monitor? Longer or wider running deck? It's imperative that you don't compromise on necessary options. As you would expect, added features will almost always mean added cost, but having the options you need on your unit can make the difference between having a useful workout option and the proverbial expensive clothes rack. The key to finding the best value in any price range is to do some research, peruse the available features, and read the specifics of the warranties.

Since buying a treadmill is a major investment for most people, you want to make sure that you've done your research first. The primary consideration when buying a treadmill is not the brand name, make or model, but getting the features that you need. It's unfortunate, but you probably will have to spend more than you thought when you first began to consider buying. Nevertheless, getting a machine that you will actually use on a regular basis will overcome the pain you feel when writing the check.
