When setting out to purchase an elliptical trainer for home use you should expect to spend around $900. Anything less than that and you could be risking getting a poor quality machine. Remember, usually a correlation exists between price and quality or craftsmanship.
Try before your buy!
Go to a local store and test out the various models of elliptical trainers. Often, you will find the lower end models make an extreme amount of noise! Remember you are using this in your home, take one of those noisy ones home and watch as your children complain because they can?t hear the TV two rooms over, with the door closed!
Then look out as you husband comes running in with baseball bat in hand because you awakened him while taking a nap after a long days work!
Now the above is exaggerated but I think you get the point.
If you do buy a lower end machine find out how long the warranty is because you will need it. Heaven forbid it break outside the warranty period, what a single part costs you could have had the better quality machine that would not break.
In conclusion, you have to buy something you are happy with that is reasonable for your budget. Ultimately only you can make that decision.
