If you are taking nutritional supplements on a regular basis, then you can probably say with a good deal of confidence that you are getting the proper daily value for all of the essential nutrients. Still a heavy reliance on nutritional supplements can produce an insincere effort at achieving a healthful diet. Providing the body with healthful foods adds to the benefits that come with taking nutritional supplements.

The purchase of a nutritional supplement does not diminish the value of a well-planned and healthful diet. For a person with such a diet, the use of nutritional supplements serves as a sort of insurance policy. It is like buying insurance for a new car. You will probably not need to depend upon it in the near future, but it is good to have.

A good way to motivate yourself to undertake diet planning is to think of ways to personalize your diet. Think of the foods that you like best, and then think how to include those foods in a healthful diet. For example, if you are fond of fruit, and if you are taking a blood pressure medicine that reduces your absorption of phosphorous, then you might want to add some extra bananas to your diet. If you are fond of fruit, and if you harbor a concern about getting prostate cancer, then you might want to add some pomegranate juice to your planned diet. Anyone with a family history that included cancer would benefit from eating plenty of broccoli and cabbage. Those foods have indoles, which counteract the action of free radicals.

Once you have planned important diet changes, then think of ways to motivate your willingness to stick to that plan. Your nutritional supplements will be only an added insurance, if you stick with your plan. Increase your motivation to stick to the plan by making sure that you have created a realistic plan.

If you stick to your planned diet for an entire month, then you might want to provide yourself with a reward. Pick a reasonable reward; do not spend an entire day ignoring every aspect of your well-planned diet.
