With all the pollutants in our foods and environment, it is important for us to protect ourselves from toxins. (This is a general term used by practitioners of alternative medicine for poisons in the body.)

What are they? Toxins can be natural or chemical substances that cause harmful effects to us. They can include heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead or organic compounds. They can also include bacteria and any other substance that is harmful to your body.

Where do they come from? There are many ways that toxins can contaminate our bodies. The main ways are from:

? Ingestion?food and drinks
? Pollution in the air
? Being bitten by poisonous animals and insects
? Industrial waste

Ingestion?food and drinks: Surprisingly enough, there are many ways our food and water gets contaminated and causes us to ingest toxins:

? By the fertilizers and insecticides used commercially to grow our food
? By bacteria-natural spoilage
? Water gets polluted in several ways

o Human waste with open sewers pouring into our oceans
o Industrial waste seeping into the ground and getting dumped in our seas and in landfills
o Acid rain

From pollution in the air:

? This is mainly from industrial smoke
? Bacteria
? Car fumes

Being bitten by poisonous animals and insects

Industrial waste: There are 2 main ways industry brings toxins to us:

? Through water
? By air

So how can we protect ourselves? Here are a few ways:

? By improving the water we drink:

o Filtering our water with filters attached to our faucets
o Distilling our water
o Boiling water
o Using bottled water

? Eating organic foods that are not grown with commercial fertilizers and insecticides
? Using EPA approved devices for filtering industrial smoke in our industries
? Using devices on our cars to filter out carbon dioxide fumes
? Regulating dumping of industrial waste

Foods to help us protect ourselves: There are several foods that help our bodies protect and eliminate toxins from our bodies:

? Vegetables, like beets, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, and peppers
? Fruits, like melons and citrus fruits
? Eggs, Garlic, Brown rice, and whole wheat products

Cleansing diets: These diets can help you get rid of toxins fast. Many claim that regular use of these diets makes them feel better and maintains their health. Some of these diets include:

? Fasting or abstanance of food
? Increased consumption of fish
? Different combinations of foods
? Eating foods which are high in antitoxins
? Flushing your system with increased amounts of water

As can be seen from these points there are several ways that you can protect your body from toxins. Your body naturally gets rid of toxins by your liver, kidneys, and feces, but sometimes there are just too many poisons for the body to handle. This is the reason we need to help protect ourselves from these substances. You can do this by using the above methods and tips.
