For centuries, the pericarp of the mangosteen has been used in traditional medicine in Southeast Asia. It has been treasured not only for its medicinal properties but also for its delicious taste. The fruit is purple, has a snow white purple, and is about the size of a small tangerine. Traditionally, it has been used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, dysentery, fever, fatigue, indigestion, infection, malaise, parasites, skin conditions and urinary tract infections.
Found within the whole fruit of the mangosteen are some unique phytochemicals called xanthones.
