British Pregnancy Advisory Service

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service was established as a registered charity in 1968 to provide a safe, legal abortion service. At that time, shortly after the legislation of abortion, the National Health Service was unable to provide abortion care for all who needed it.

Today NHS abortion services remain limited and so BPAS continues to provide affordable, high quality care for those who cannot, or choose not to, access it. BPAS collaborates closely with the NHS and, in areas where local arrangements allow it, BPAS provides a range of reproductive health care services, free of cost to the user, on behalf of the NHS.

BPAS is now Britain’s largest single abortion provider and cares for almost 50,000 women with unwanted pregnancies each year.

BPAS has a commitment to education, research and the development of good practice. It is a source of accurate information and informed comment about the causes, consequences and management of unwanted pregnancy to parliamentarians, policy makers and opinion formers.

National Childbirth Trust

The National Childbirth Trust is the largest and best known childbirth and parenting charity in Europe. Run by parents, for parents, the NCT is rooted in local communities across the UK, through its network of around 400 local branches run by volunteers. The charity provides a range of educational and support services at local and national level, and this informs its campaigning work for improvements in maternity care and on social issues that matter to parents. Set up over 40 years ago, the NCT has successfully campaigned for many important changes, including, for example, the right of a woman in labour to be accompanied by a birth partner. Today, the NCT has around 35,000 members and promotes the principle of ‘informed choice’ for women and their partners.

The NCT exists to enable all parents to have an experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting that enriches their lives and provides a sound foundation for parenthood.

The NCT runs antenatal classes and provides information on maternity issues, breastfeeding and postnatal support including specialist groups for caesareans and miscarriage.
