Many people choose to undergo a weight loss surgery to get rid of excess fat deposited in their bodies. Gastric bypass surgery is the most commonly practiced form of weight loss surgery. It is also called bariatric surgery. MGB or mini gastric bypass is a type of gastric bypass surgery. It is a low risk, long-term weight loss procedure that causes minimal pain. The surgery takes less than 30 minutes, and requires the patient to be hospitalized for less than a day.

Gastric bypass surgery involves a simple and easy procedure. In this form of surgery, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top. This pouch is made using a plastic band or with surgical staples. The smaller stomach is then connected directly to the jejunum, therefore bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper small intestine. This procedure involves making either a large cut in the abdomen or a small cut, and then uses instruments and a camera to proceed further.

Bariatric surgery works by helping the patient reduce food intakes. It does not hinder with the normal absorption of food. After the surgery, patients must stick to the guidelines and restrictions that their surgeon prescribes. Even though the guidelines may change depending on the surgeon, the patient must follow the surgeon's orders. Patients who learn to eat slowly, eat less, and avoid drinking too many fluids are the ones who see the best results. In certain cases, the operation alters the digestive procedure thus causing the food to be in an indigested and or an incompletely absorbed stage. In such cases, the food is eliminated along with the passing of stool. Surgeons in the US and elsewhere are trying to perfect this operation to avoid such situations.

Before a gastric bypass surgery, patients sign a consent form that states that they have received and understood enough information about the procedure?s benefits and risks.

Patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery lose weight quickly. Most of them continue to lose weight for about a year. It has been observed that patients lose up to a third of their weight in one to four years. Less than three out of two hundred patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery face the risk of death.

Bariatric surgery has proved to be a huge boon to obese people. It has helped people attain better health and life styles.
