The Weight Loss Myth

You?ve probably seen and heard hundreds, if not thousands of ads claiming that you can lose weight fast and without effort. They claim that all it takes is to eat their food or exercise for 15 minutes a day and you?ll be thin in ___ weeks. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Weight loss is not something that can be generalized or copied. Each individual is just that; individual.

Your approach to losing weight has to be specific, goal oriented, and have a plan; for a pre-determined period of time. You have to plan for college, retirement, and even a vacation. You set a goal and plan for that goal to become a reality. Why would you not treat your weight/health the same way. The steps used are the same and just as important.

Step one is to set short term and long term goals for yourself. It is important for you to know where you want to be. These goals should be clearly defined and written down for easy reference and constant motivation. Important things are always written. It needs to be important to you, and a written document will be extremely helpful in overcoming difficult times.

Step two is to evaluate your present condition. Where you start, is not as important as knowing where you start. Documenting your progress is the most effective motivation you will have. You need to know where you began and how far you?ve come. Seeing yourself coming closer to that goal, (short or long term) is very powerful and will sustain you through the hardest of times.

Step Three is doing some practical research. Ask yourself the question, ?How do I think about food and nutrition?? It sounds silly, yet how you think about something determines how you act towards it. Start looking for information on how best to reach your goals. Subjects like nutrition, exercise, sleep patterns, and eating habits are a good place to start. Look at it this way; you wouldn?t put your hard earned money into a 401K before first checking it out first. You would want to know if it is: solvent, a proven performer, high risk, low risk, and things like that. You would base your decision to fund it or not, on the information you?ve acquired.

Step four is making a plan for success. No plan, no success. It?s as simple as that. Planning takes time yes, but it is time well spent. Detailing how you are going to reach the goal(s) you have set is extremely important. Think of it as a roadmap to your destination. You need it to get there. Plans can be simple or complex depending on the individual. Come up with one that you can stick to realistically. Include all elements that are important to your goal. It should be firm, yet flexible. A plan that is too rigid will always frustrate you and not work effectively, if at all.

Step five is commitment. Some call it determination or the will to succeed. The fact is, it is you and only you, who can decide to press on or give up. You have to want to lose weight and become healthier; it has to be a priority. Being consistent is far more important than a quick loss of a few pounds. The earlier you realize that, the more effective your plan will be.

Weight management should be your goal for life. It will be a healthier one too.
