There is a direct relationship between a good diet and good health. A balanced diet should involve the regular consumption of fresh and healthy foods in a proportionate manner. Unfortunately we are continuously being bombarded with conflicting information about what to eat and what not to eat while on a diet to either gain or lose weight.

Depending upon whether your diet is meant to increase or decrease your body weight, or for fat loss, you should choose a diet that is suitable for you. Consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables should form the basis of any diet. For women, vegetables with high iron content are vital. Moreover green leafy vegetables such as spinach, roots and beets are essential as well. And no matter what kind of diet, the consumption of at least 8 to 10 glasses of water is highly recommended.

A diet should consist of two primary characteristics; it gives the body all the required nutrients and it?s easy to follow. A highly demanding diet can be very tiresome and if it?s confusing to follow odds are you won?t. You?ll last two or three weeks at best, and then it?s back to your old unhealthy eating habits.

We all have our working schedules and a diet should be such that it fits easily into your daily living style. It is important to remember that the female body requires a minimum of about 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day. For males the range is 1500 to 1800. This should be the governing principal when planning to go on a diet as anything lower than this, while contributing to fat loss, can also leave the body deficient in nutrients and cause damage.

Vegetables, fruits, pulses, protein rich foods along with proper quantity of foods rich in carbohydrates and fats form essential part of a healthy and balanced diet. Even if you want to lose weight you shouldn?t totally eliminate fats and carbohydrates from your diet. Healthy fats are required for the functioning of your immune and endocrine systems. Carbohydrates are required for short-term energy and if they are cut too drastic, the body may burn muscle tissue as a fuel source.

Besides the obvious physical benefits, a diet high in fresh vegetables and fruits can help boost a person?s outlook on life. A good diet is also important not only for a fit body but also for a healthy mind. With a good and nutritious diet a person will feel more lively and energetic throughout the day.

Some researchers, including Dr. Thomas Paul of the USA, consider a balanced diet another name for a ?golden life.? A diet containing foods rich in all the primary nutrients (such as fruits and salads) keeps one?s body fit and nourished. For example citrus fruits provide Vitamin C, which has numerous benefits from maintaining proper teeth and bone health, to boosting the immune system and fighting free radicals.

Considering togo on a diet is an investment for a lifetime. Not only will you grow and develop the kind of body you want, but your body will be healthier as well whether for gaining muscular mass, fat loss, or losing weight. So go ahead and change those old habits and start down the road to health and happiness.
