If you consume more calories than you can burn off, your body stores the excess as fat and causes you to gain weight. If you only eat as much as your body uses, your weight will stays the same. To really lose body fat and weight, you will need to use up more calories than you eat.

However it is really easy to over consume calories. Many processed food, fast food and desserts pack many calories into small packages. That is why millions of people find that dieting on their own too difficult. If you want to sign up for a weight loss and dieting program, be sure that some of these important factors are there.

The diet should have proof of effectiveness. You should review the long term data on as many people who joined the program. Do not just look at the success stories. Look at the failures and why they failed.

The diet should have qualifications. The program should be run by professionals, educated in nutrition and weight loss. It is better if they have help from registered dieticians and experts in behavior modification and exercise physiology.

The program should emphasize on slow weight loss. They should aim to change the long term eating habits of the clients. Short term weight loss and drastic weight loss can backfire and you can gain weight back just as quickly as you loses it.

The program should emphasize on nutritional balance. The foods allowed in the program should be from the basic food groups. There should be instructions and help for preparing healthy meals as part of the program.

The food in the program should be easily accessible. These foods should be able to be purchased from your supermarket.

The program should include exercise instructions. The people from the program should be able to discuss with you some basic information about healthy and safe exercises that you can do.

The program should include behavior modification. It is good if the program provides written materials or some counseling on how to change your eating habits for the better. It is just useless of you revert back to your old ways after losing your weight. You will still go back to where you begin.

The program should also include follow up programs. Continuing and on going support can help and motivate you even after your weight loss goal is achieved. They should be available to everyone on the program.

With these factors in mind in selecting your weight loss program, you can be assured of better chance of success in conquering the battle of weight losing and keeping it off.
