Yeast infection can occur in men as well as women, though it is in women that yeast infections are most commonly found. You might have a yeast infection if you have itching and redness around the external vaginal area. There may be a whiteish discharge, and you may experience a burning sensation and possibly some pain when you urinate, or have sex. The good news is that it's fairly easy to get rid of a yeast infection. It's also fairly easy to prevent it happening to you again. Here are a few tips to help you...

1. Good hygiene is always a sensible practice. It is in the inside folds of the external vulva that bacteria can multiply if unchecked. Wash this area thoroughly and always dry it thoroughly too after showering or bathing.

2. Cotton is the best material to have next to your skin. For this reason, always wear fully cotton underpants. Make sure that any pantyhose you wear has a cotton crotch gusset, and make sure that your underpants and pantyhose, and your external clothes too, are not too tight fitting in the crotch area.

3. If you exercise at the gym, or just jog in the park, always change your clothes and underpants after first showering. Change your underclothes regularly to avoid any possible build up of bacteria in enclosed and unaired places.

4. If you swim in a pool, avoid sitting around for long periods in a swimsuit that is wet. And always shower after swimming in a pool to remove chlorine from your skin. Remember to thoroughly dry the area around the vulva afterwards.

5. Plenty of rest helps the body fight infections better. Make sure you get enough sleep every night. And always eat a healthy diet too. The right foods can make a difference to both get rid of a yeast infection, and prevent it happening again.
